Caracas, 9 janvier 2025 — La cheffe de l’opposition vénézuélienne, Maria Corina Machado, a été arrêtée ce jeudi à Caracas alors qu’elle participait à une manifestation contre l’investiture de Nicolas Maduro. Cette arrestation marque une nouvelle étape dans la répression exercée par le régime chaviste, à la veille d’un mandat présidentiel largement contesté.
Maria Corina Machado, 57 ans, est apparue en public pour la première fois depuis son entrée en clandestinité en août dernier. Elle voulait soutenir Edmundo González Urrutia, candidat de l’opposition qui revendique la victoire à l’élection présidentielle de juillet dernier. Cependant, les forces de l’ordre l’ont violemment interpellée, selon son entourage, tirant des coups de feu lors de son arrestation.
Cette arrestation survient dans un contexte de crise politique aiguë au Venezuela. Nicolas Maduro avait été déclaré vainqueur avec 52 % des voix, mais l’opposition dénonce une fraude électorale massive. González affirme avoir obtenu 67 % des suffrages et brandit des preuves que le Conseil national électoral refuse de publier.
La contestation a entraîné des manifestations meurtrières : 28 morts, plus de 200 blessés, et des milliers d’arrestations. Edmundo González, actuellement en tournée internationale, a condamné l’arrestation de Mme Machado, ainsi que l’enlèvement de son gendre, qu’il considère comme un acte d’intimidation.
Pendant ce temps, le régime de Maduro mobilise ses partisans dans des contre-manifestations pour réaffirmer sa légitimité. Des milliers de policiers et militaires ont été déployés à Caracas pour assurer la sécurité de la cérémonie d’investiture prévue ce vendredi. La tension reste vive dans le pays, avec des risques d’escalade dans les prochains jours.
